Bi-Colour Sapphire Specimen, 25 x 20 x 8 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
Bi-Colour Sapphire Specimen, 25 x 20 x 8 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
This raw corundum specimen was collected from a high-alpine occurrence in the Revelstoke region of British Columbia, discovered by the late prospector Herb Hyder. This claim is now owned by Rock Rush, who provided me with this specimen.
The specimen hosts a well-defined, semi-transparent zoned purple-magenta to dark blue sapphire hexagonal corundum crystal, with an excellent stepped or record-keeper etched face. This crystal measures approximately 7 x 5.5 mm and sits on a light green chrysotile-antigorite and brown-beige amphibole matrix. Under ultraviolet light, the corundum glows a vivid bright red-to-magenta pink fluorescence, reflecting its chromium-bearing composition. This unique piece highlights exceptional Canadian gem geochemistry.
