Bi-Colour Sapphire Specimen, 27 x 18 x 12 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
Bi-Colour Sapphire Specimen, 27 x 18 x 12 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
This raw corundum specimen features a striking zoned purple-magenta to dark blue sapphire crystal that was collected from a high-alpine occurrence in the Revelstoke region of British Columbia discovered by the late prospector Herb Hyder. This claim is not owned by Rock Rush who provided me with this specimen. This unique piece highlights exceptional Canadian gem geochemistry.
The specimen is a broken half of a well-defined, semi-transparent hexagonal corundum crystal. Its distinctive colour zoning features a rich purple-to-magenta outer zone surrounding a dark blue core. The specimen is hosted on a light green chrysotile-antigorite matrix. Under ultraviolet light, the corundum glows a vivid bright red-to-magenta pink fluorescence, reflecting its chromium-bearing composition. These sapphire crystals would be set raw into jewelry with a careful hand.
