This natural corundum-sapphire originates from Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador, sourced from lapidary rough ethically hand-mined by local prospector Edmund Saunders. Hand-cut and polished in my Saskatoon lapidary studio, this large freeform pear-drop cabochon showcases granular corundum alongside its natural host rock matrix, creating a beautiful contrast of textures and tones. The gemstone displays a range of soft lavender to deep red tones set amongst lighter-colored bluish-grey feldspar. Under ultraviolet light, the stone reveals a vivid fluorescence highlighting its chromium-rich geochemistry. A fully Canadian-sourced and shaped gemstone, this piece is well-suited for custom jewelry designers, collectors, or anyone seeking a unique, locality-specific specimen.
