This natural corundum-sapphire originates from Hopedale region of Newfoundland and Labrador, sourced from lapidary rough ethically hand-mined by local prospector Edmund Saunders. Hand-cut and polished in my Saskatoon lapidary studio, this small high dome, oval cabochon features granular corundum captured within its natural host rock, displaying deep purple-pink-magenta tones that shift depending on lighting conditions. The surrounding matrix features dark biotite and grey feldspar, while pyrite inclusions create a striking, purple lapis-like allure. Under ultraviolet light, the stone reveals a vivid fluorescence highlighting its chromium-rich geochemistry.
