Magenta Sapphire Specimen, 12 x 10 x 4.5 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
Magenta Sapphire Specimen, 12 x 10 x 4.5 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
This raw corundum specimen features a striking magenta sapphire crystal, with slight purple undertones, that was collected from a high-alpine occurrence in the Revelstoke region of British Columbia by the late prospector Herb Hyder. This unique piece highlights exceptional Canadian gem geochemistry.
This specimen features a very bright, semi-transparent corundum crystal with a unique stepped crystal face. The angled back (shown on the Queen Elizabeth side of the coin) props the specimen up at a nice angle for viewing. Under ultraviolet light, it glows a vivid bright red to magenta pink fluorescence, reflecting its chromium-bearing composition. These sapphire crystals have been lightly tumbled to remove loose material and could be set raw into jewelry with a careful hand.
