Icy Blue Sapphire Specimen, 20 x 18 x 9 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
Icy Blue Sapphire Specimen, 20 x 18 x 9 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
This small, beautiful corundum-sapphire specimen was collected from the Revelstoke region of British Columbia. This material comes from a high-alpine occurrence originally discovered by the late Canadian prospector Herb Hyder, a great friend of mine. Rock Rush now owns the claim and hand-mined and supplied this specimen from this remote location.
This raw mineral specimen features striking sapphire crystals hosted on a pale, contrasting light-green chrysotile-antigorite matrix. The sapphires in this specimen range in colour and/or display distinct color zoning, including shades of icy blue to soft pink. This rough crystal specimen looks great from all angles and features well-defined crystalline structures with stepped crystal faces and unique natural surface etching. Under ultraviolet light, the corundum in this specimen glows with a soft pink fluorescence, explaining the pink undertones in this blue sapphire, as it has chromium-bearing geochemistry. The sapphire crystal in this specimen measures approximately 7 x 5 mm.
