Sapphire Specimen, 11.5 x 9.5 x 4 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
Sapphire Specimen, 11.5 x 9.5 x 4 mm, from British Columbia, Canada
This raw corundum specimen features a striking wine coloured sapphire crystal that bisects the specimen and is visible on both sides. The host rock for this specimen is brown-beige, radiating amphibole crystals, which harbor their own visual appeal and add an interesting contrast with a unique luster. Under ultraviolet light, it glows a vivid soft pink, reflecting its chromium-bearing composition. These sapphire crystals have been lightly tumbled to remove loose material and could be set raw into jewelry with a careful hand.
Collected from a high-alpine occurrence in the Revelstoke region of British Columbia by the late prospector Herb Hyder, this unique piece highlights exceptional Canadian gem geochemistry.
