Slab of Corundum-Sapphire in Host Rock, 60 x 55 x 9 mm, from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Slab of Corundum-Sapphire in Host Rock, 60 x 55 x 9 mm, from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
This unpolished slab of corundum-bearing rock from Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador features porphyroblasts and granular layers of corundum-sapphire in shades ranging from lavender-purple to soft pink. The corundum forms in a dark, contrasting biotite-rich matrix and glows vividly under shortwave and longwave UV light.
While left unpolished, the surfaces on this specimen can be oiled or sealed with epoxy to bring out its full colour. This piece is also versatile lapidary rough for custom cabochons, tumbling, or carving projects.
Weight: 66 grams
Dimensions: approximately 60 x 55 mm, with thickness tapering from 8.50 to 9.25 mm. Please note this slab has two very small saw lips on two edges, on opposite sides of the slab, as shown in the photos. The saw lips and slightly tapered thickness result from cutting on a manual saw.
