This unpolished end-cut slab of corundum-bearing rock from Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador features porphyroblasts and granular layers of corundum-sapphire in shades ranging from plum-purple to soft pink. The corundum forms in a dark, contrasting biotite-rich matrix and glows vividly under shortwave and longwave UV light.
As an end cut, one side features a naturally broken surface, making it an excellent display specimen. While left unpolished, the surface can be oiled or sealed with epoxy to bring out its full color. This piece is also versatile lapidary rough for custom cabochons, tumbling, or carving projects.
