Slab of Corundum-Sapphire in Host Rock, 35 x 30 x 9.30 mm, from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
This small, unpolished slab of corundum-bearing rock from Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador features porphyroblasts and granular layers of corundum-sapphire in shades ranging from reddish-purple to lavender-purple to soft pink. Overall, the corundum in this small slab is of higher quality than most material from this locality.
The corundum forms in a dark, contrasting biotite-rich matrix and glows vividly under shortwave and longwave UV light. While left unpolished, the surfaces on this specimen can be oiled or sealed with epoxy to bring out its full colour. This piece is also versatile lapidary rough for custom cabochons, tumbling, or carving projects.
