This pair of small, unpolished slabs of corundum-bearing rock originates from Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador. The corundum forms as porphyroblasts and granular layers of corundum-sapphire in shades ranging from purple to lavender-purple to soft pink, and forms in a dark, contrasting biotite-rich matrix. This is ruby-leaning, chromium-bearing sapphire; therefore, it glows vividly under shortwave and longwave UV light.
While left unpolished, the surfaces on this specimen can be oiled or sealed with epoxy to bring out its full colour. This piece is also versatile lapidary rough for custom cabochons, tumbling, or carving projects.
Weight: 58 grams
Dimensions: each slab is similar in size, at approximately 60 x 25 mm. One slab is 7.80 mm, and the other is 7.95 mm, with a slight taper to 6.95 mm at the opposite end. Overall, I would say these are excellent cuts for a manual saw.
