Two Small Slabs of Corundum-Sapphire in Host Rock, 60 x 25 mm, from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
This pair of small, unpolished slabs of corundum-bearing rock originates from Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador. The corundum forms as porphyroblasts and granular layers of corundum-sapphire in shades ranging from purple to lavender-purple to soft pink, and forms in a dark, contrasting biotite-rich matrix. This is ruby-leaning, chromium-bearing sapphire; therefore, it glows vividly under shortwave and longwave UV light.
While left unpolished, the surfaces on this specimen can be oiled or sealed with epoxy to bring out its full colour. This piece is also versatile lapidary rough for custom cabochons, tumbling, or carving projects.
Weight: 58 grams
Dimensions: each slab is similar in size, at approximately 60 x 25 mm. These slabs have variable thickness because they are cut on a manual saw. They are 6.5 at the thinnest and 9.25 mm at the thickest.
